International Walk to School Day

The international walk to school day promotes safe biking and walking to school throughout the year. This day encourages kids to walk or bike to school. Its main goals are to enhance the health of kids, improve air quality and the environment, and creating safer routes for walking and biking. Biking and walking to school can be fun and a way to get fresh air and exercise throughout the day. International Walk to School Day was on October 7, 2009. If you did not walk or bike to school, watch out for the next International Walk to School Day in 2010 and make it a point to walk or bike on that day or even better throughout the school year!

  1. I didn't know that such an "International Walk to School Day" existed. Excellent idea indeed! But, only once a year? It should be every month or something!

Also, take a look at http://www.iwalktoschool.org/award_app_template.cfm?ID=325&ayear=2005. It is about the Morton Way Public School in Canada. They have instituted "Warling Wednesdays", a "walk to school committee", weekly surveys, "iWALK Club" card traking the number of times they wak, small rewards, "Walking Winners" monthly draws, campaigns to reduce car drop offs, prizes for classes with 100% participation, etc.

Have you guys considered similar efforts at your school?

  2. One walking day in a year is too less, but a great start. I vote for one walking day every week or at least every month. Maybe the schools can give out incentives to a classroom where all the kids walked to school!

  3. I would like to see schools do this once a year to give away prizes for the most innovative idea around making biking more popular amongst school kids. I agree that this should not be a once-a-year activity but a once-a-year celebration of the achievements during the prior year.
